Sunday saw the first live action in 2014 for the Leicester Falcons against the Coventry Jets.
In a good natured competitive atmosphere, the two teams looked to work off some rust in a controlled scrimmage environment. With three members of the current Falcons Coaching Staff; Head Coach Saul Freer, Defensive Backs Coach Karl Burgess and Wide Receiver Coach Peter Cleaver all part of previous Bowl winning Coventry Teams there was more than an air of familiarity between the two teams.
With Coventry being a Premier division team who contended for playoff positions last year, the Falcons young roster was always going to struggle against the more experienced set up. However, the Falcons didn’t look too out of place against their seasoned opponents, at times shutting down the Coventry Air Attack, as well as moving the ball efficiently against the Coventry Defence. The team periods saw a number of standout performances from some of the Falcons rookie players who were getting a taste of live football for the first time, stepping up to the challenge without backing down.
With the Falcons in their second year of their rebuilding schedule, everything looks promising for a season which will see them challenge to get in the play offs for the first time since the teams 2011 trip to the Division 1 title game. With there being a month left before their first game against the Shropshire Revolution, practice will continue to hot up. If you are considering playing American football for the first time there is still time to come down before the start of the season, details of training will be on the front page of the website.
Best of Luck to Coventry for their upcoming season.
