The Leicester Falcons are proud to announce their new coaching line up for 2017. In the off season, following his second championship season, Head Coach Lester Hopewell has decided to step down from his position, so he can spend more time with his family. All of us at the Falcons would like to thank him and wish him all the very best in the future. Replacing Coach Hopewell will be Noel Cassar (right), who was special teams coach in 2016, but has head coach experience at BUCS Premier University of Derby Braves.
Coach Cassar introduced his tough style of coaching to the team at this years awards presentation. Following an impressive rookie season as Defensive Coordinator Coach Wayne Gumbs remains in place and is looking to build on an impressive 2016 where his unit only conceded 50 points in 13 games including 9 shut outs.
Returning with Coach Wayne will be Andy Davis returning as Linebackers coach. Re-joining this formidable unit will be Defensive Line Coach Bernie Hackshaw, A legend of Britball who has a better Salsa move than Victor Cruz. Bernie played alongside Coach Cassar at the Nottingham Hoods and Coach Gumbs at Coventry Jets, as well as several seasons as a Falcon.
On the Offensive side of the ball, there is a new OC in position to replace Stuart Franklin, but we cannot announce who this is at this stage, but they have a wealth of international experience, and will have the challenge of managing this high power offence who scored 50 points on a number of occasions last season.
Incoming Offensive Line coach will be Richard Barratt who Coach Cassar has brought in from Derby. Richard played with GM Guy Kersey at their East Midlands rivals Nottingham Caesars. Ady Edwards will be returning as running backs coach alongside Guy Kersey as a double act to help guide this talented group. Also on offence is wide receivers coach Andy Plant, a longtime Falcons receiver who will be passing on his wealth of experience to this group.
