Falcons 10 : 0 Edinburgh Wolves
Leicester Falcons recorded a much needed win against Edinburgh Wolves on Sunday. The match was finely balanced through three quarters before a change in tactics allowed the Falcons to pull ahead in the fourth.
Through much of the first half, neither team could get anything going on offence. The Wolves operated a run-first offence but were closed down well by the Falcons defensive line, and the Falcons spread offence was off target in windy conditions. Quarterback Marcus Urbanski found more success running than through the air, and running back Nick Jones kept the chains moving on his way to a 100 yard game, but all the Falcons had to show for the first half was a missed field goal.
In the second half the Falcons defence kept up the pressure, Emmanuel Matosokere and Taylor Brown recording interceptions, but with the offence still failing to fire Leicester abandoned their air raid game and instead moved to last year’s game of option runs. This immediately paid dividends as the Falcons put together a sustained drive between Jones and Urbanski, with Urbanski himself taking it over for the touchdown from seven yards out. On the subsequent kickoff Brown forced a fumble which was recovered by the Falcons, and Danny Burton added a 40-yard field goal to build an unassailable lead.
The win puts the Falcons one game clear of the relegation battle in the Northern Premier Division with four games left to play. Next up is last year’s division champions, Tamworth Phoenix, at TMDP Park, Blaby, next Sunday (1pm KO).
